Karate began in India in 520 A.D. when Bodhidharma traveled to China and taught the monks exercises at the Shaolin Szu Temple. Soon these exercises spread across China to Okinawa. In 1477, the Sho Dynasty of Okinawa took away all weapons from the people. Karate, which means "empty hand," became more popular. In 1609, Japan took control of Okinawa, the weapons ban was renewed and karate had to be taught in secret. Karate was brought to the USA after World War II and many styles of karate were developed. Our style is called Shorei Goju Ryu. Master Herb Johnson became the style head in 1979. Master Kay Myers earned her black belt in 1982 and is now an 8th degree black belt. She should be called "Shihan." She is the sensei of Sensei Jeanie Gensheimer, a 7th degree black belt.
